Scales of Silence – Review

While gamers are always looking for the ‘next big thing,’ the next new IP, the next and the newest… There is always something about a great classic idea that can be tweaked and feel fresh. Sometimes you don’t need to reinvent the wheel; you can just give a nod to nostalgia and polish up an idea to make it your own.

Now I’m not saying that every game that’s based on something nostalgic is a winner, and if you rely on just nostalgia to appeal to gamers, you’re likely not going to get far. We’re finicky and quick to tell you how we feel, good or bad.

Scales of Silence from Aggro Games takes the classic “Snake” game that we all know and incorporates new designs, mechanics, twists, and turns to make something that was far more addictive than I expected.

I played the campaign solo, but you can play it in 2-player co-op as well.

You can also play with up to 8 people on one shared screen. This game would be a blast as a party game with friends. Plug in 8 controllers, split the keyboard up to 4 ways, or have 2 people share a gamepad. Mix and match your choices to whatever you have available. Four battle modes: Score Battle, Timed Match. Snake Royale and Endless Classic are sure to be a blast with friends.

There are 20 different serpent types, each one with unique characteristics. Speed, acceleration, starting length and skills. You will meet them all as you work through the campaign. The campaign will cross 10 different biomes, where each will give you different obstacles to overcome. Permanent darkness, poison food, compromised sightlines, etc.

No microtransactions!! No high spec PC required, you don’t even need internet. This is built for couch co-op. Now, that is a great idea, but for someone like me, most of my friends are online, so I do wish online co-op were an option. That didn’t keep me from playing 3 hours the first time I jumped into the demo, and multiple hours since then. It’s been a lot of fun, and I can see myself jumping back in, frequently.

Until next time…be good to yourself and be good to each other.

Cinder here, the solo dev behind Scales of Silence. Thank you for such a thoughtful and honest review, Peggy. You really got what I was going for, and your note on online co-op is well taken, it’s the feedback I hear most so it’s on my mind for the future. Truly grateful for the support and the kind words.
