Tollway Tycoon is a simulation/strategy game from 10ft Games. You will run a tollbooth where you must maintain and grow your location while facing some wild, random events and activities you encounter. When I first encountered this, I thought it was a chill idle game, but it isn’t. It does require some management and planning. Knowing when to save you money or upgrade, what upgrades you should invest in first, and even what staff members you should hire first requires a little patience and attention. Thankfully, the controls and gameplay are straightforward and not very complex.

Starting with a single toll booth on a dirt road, you must determine the price of the toll charged. Sadly, your workers aren’t very reliable and will often over/under charge the vehicles passing through. Using money earned, a loan if you choose to accept it, and bonuses earned through contracts accepted, you will eventually grow to a toll complex with multiple lanes, an upgraded highway and even a roadside building that can sell snacks or provide information.

You are in charge of everything a driver pays attention to, fixing potholes, removing debris, dealing with breakdowns…everything to keep the traffic, and hopefully money, flowing.

The gameplay loop is tight and reels you in for ‘just one more day,’ and I was determined to survive the 20 days to get the win. Spoiler, I was fired….a lot.

It’s currently in early access, so it is still a work in development. It might be a little rough around the edges, but its quirky humour made me laugh a lot.

Also, encountering random events like deer, tornadoes, UFO’s, random interesting vehicles at the gates, and even zombies kept me interested and engaged.

This is an inexpensive little game that kept me entertained, and I will be diving back into it to see if I can learn from my mistakes and become a Tollway Tycoon.
