It’s back…and it’s BEAUTIFUL!!
Yesterday, Ubisoft ran a premiere on YouTube, finally confirming the worst-kept secret in recent gaming news. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is getting a full remake, called Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, and it will launch July 9th, 2026.
My love for the Assassin’s Creed franchise runs deep. Anyone who knows me knows it’s probably my favourite franchise. While the Ezio storyline will always be my favourite, Black Flag is right at the top of my list for favourite Assassin’s Creed games. 2013 introduced us to Edward Kenway, and we got to sail the seas and experience Pirate naval combat. Now, I’ll be real here, the naval combat was tough for me at the time, but even worse was the underwater segments involving running out of breath or the sharks. These were pure anxiety-inducing.
Over the years, Ubisoft Montreal’s 2013 Black Flag has often come up as a game in ‘need’ of a remaster by fans. It’s a beloved game by a huge fan base.
I will say that, generally. I am not a fan of remasters of games. It normally feels like a money grab with a slight polish. Remakes don’t often get a lot of love from me for the same reasons. I’m not sure I’ve ever looked at a remaster or a remake and felt the excitement that I felt yesterday watching the YouTube premiere for Resynced.
The presentation, led by Welsh actor Matt Ryan (who is reprising his role as Edward Kenway), walked us through the vision behind the remake helmed by the Singapore Ubisoft studio. The Singapore studio was one of Montreal’s main collaborators for the original, so this ‘passing of the torch’ makes sense for the remake. Right off the bat, we get confirmation that this is a faithful remake that has been “totally rebuilt from the ground up with the latest version of the Anvil Engine and enriched with lots of new additions.” I am happy we will be getting the same story of Edward’s journey.
Immediately noticeable is the new character models, using updated motion capture via the Ubisoft Toronto studio. The world though….STUNNING. “The Caribbean world reaches a new level of immersion and realism powered by high resolution textures, enhanced lighting, strikingly detailed environments and a new dynamic weather system. Even underwater exploration is more expansive, more beautiful and more perilous than ever before,” we’re told during the presentation. We are treated to photorealistic scenes of the high seas, the jungles, the towns, and even the underwater scenes featuring a nasty shark. I am unsure how I will handle a more realistic version of something that caused me so much anxiety before.

As for new content, we are teased with some additional stories involving characters like Blackbeard and Stede, as well as a story involving Edward’s wife. Finding out this will be written by Darby McDevitt made my heart happy. He’s the original writer for Black Flag as well as other Assassin’s Creed titles. The modern-day segments have also been reworked, and creative director Paul Fu teases that some of these will focus on Edward’s internal struggles.
Combat has also been “entirely reworked into an action-oriented experience,” where “every move now plays a specific role with faster, more fluid attacks and combos.” There is a greater emphasis on using the environment in combat, and the dreaded stealth missions (that I often failed and had to restart) should be easier now that Edward can freely crouch. The instant failure of being discovered during this mission was a known pain point and has been removed. Not the person you are tailing or eavesdropping on will just notice you and react accordingly. Be ready to fight. Combat is getting a double-edged HUD, allowing for quick cycling of weapons. This should allow for more fluid and dynamic combat.
Parkour also looks more fluid, and I’m excited for that. Parkour has often been frustrating when revisiting older games, but it has often been one of my favourite mechanics in the AC games.
Naval combat has been reworked. Edward’s ship, The Jackdaw, has more firepower and upgrades. Of important note, you can have a pet cat or monkey on your ship now as well. Three new officers are joining the crew: Lucy Baldwin, The Padre and Dead Man Smith. Each has its own stories and unique abilities. One of my favourite parts of Black Flag was sailing around d listening to my crew singing the sea shanties, and they are still there. There are also new shanties for the Resynced version. We are informed that Woodkid will be adding some new music, and since they were involved with Assassin’s Creed Revelations, I know they are bringing some franchise love to the game.

It was lovely to hear that Black Flag Resynced will remain a single-player experience and there will be no multiplayer or DLC. This means it will focus on the story we are given.

If it wasn’t clear, I’m REALLY excited for this to launch in July and will be playing it day 1. It is a fully priced game, which makes sense, given it’s an entire rebuild on a new engine. If you don’t want to pay full price, you can grab a month of Ubisoft+ for significantly less money and play it when it’s available there on Day 1. Along with the standard and deluxe editions, there is a beautiful Collector’s Edition containing a statue, map and many other items. It’s stunning.

Thanks for reading my thoughts. Until next time, be good to yourself and be good to each other.
