Steam Next Fest – Idle Games

The first Steam Next Fest of 2026 is here, running from February 23 to March 2, and it looks like there are close to 4000 demos available. I have played a lot of the selections and have chosen to showcase some of my favourites. The easiest way for me to do this is to break them up into sections/genres and highlight a handful in each category. What you’ll find here is a combination of descriptions from the game’s official Steam pages and some notes based on my first impressions.  I hope you take some time to try out some of the demos provided and Wishlist your favourites, provide reviews and feedback.  It means a lot to the wonderfully passionate Indie developers. Remember, all these demos are early looks with more content and features to come in the future.

This post will focus on Idle Games and is listed in alphabetical order. These idle games are all of a similar style; they sit along the bottom of your screen and progress while you are inactive or do other tasks.

From Cozy Sanctuary’s Steam page: Cozy Sanctuary is a relaxing pet simulation game where you care for adorable animals living at the bottom of your screen. Grow their food and keep them happy and fed to attract even more furry friends! They’ll stay out of your way while you work or study, but don’t forget to give them attention!

Cozy Sanctuary sets up adorable animals in a peaceful home at the bottom of your screen. While you work and relax, they will eat, play, grow and become happier. During the demo, you are limited to what you can do and how many animals you have access to, but you can farm food for your animals, as well as keep them fed, watered and clean. You can also pet them and watch them play with toys and decorations. You can decorate your cozy space with benches, flowers and lamps to personalize your sanctuary.

Clicking on your animals allows you to see their happiness and any needs they have. Once they reach a certain happiness level, you can release them into the wild, should you choose as well. This provides you with income but also a sense of productivity and doing something good for the animals in your care.

While you will have ducks and rabbits in the demo, there are more species coming at launch, as well as more progression, decorations and expansions.

From Cozywood Creek’s Steam page: A gentle idle game with a living stream flowing quietly at the bottom of your screen. Terraform the land and watch as animals arrive to make Cozywood their home. Cultivate the surrounding area and bring this cozy ecosystem to life.

Cozywood Creek has, not only animals, but a riverbed dynamic that you can terraform and create a living world at the bottom of your screen while you work, study or unwind. Because you have a ‘living world’ the animals are much smaller, but what I loved the most about this demo was the sound effects. The flowing water was very relaxing as a background soundtrack as I worked.

There will be more ecosystems at launch and more animals, plants and landscape items to unlock. A unique feature to Cozywood Creek is the way things are unlocked. Unlocks are earned by doing other tasks, like you unlock sheep after having 10 grasses in your world. You unlock ducks after having 4 reeds, etc.

No timers and no task list mean your world unfolds slowly. This is a game to just let breathe and for you to check in on when you choose.

From Grandpa’s Bee Haven’s Steam page: A cozy 2D idle beekeeping sim that sits at the bottom of your screen. Help Grandpa build his bee haven by setting up beehives, upgrading them, unlocking new hive types, bee species, beekeeping equipment and more land. You can also hire cute helpers and decorate the place in creative ways.

Grandpa’s Bee Haven is the first on this list to have a little human character at the bottom of your screen while you multitask. Help Grandpa set up his apiary. Different styles of beehives and equipment to manufacture a variety of products are all available to purchase from your shop as you progress. Start out by placing a beehive (with a queen bee) in your chosen spot, place a water source nearby, and the bees get to work. Purchase a honey extractor to start making honey to sell. Next, a solar extractor to start collecting beeswax. Create your perfect location with a variety of trees and flowers to make yourself and your bees feel like home.

You will be able to eventually hire helpers for your business, like Grandma, a scientist, a shaman or even a loyal dog or cat. Each has its own capabilities, like Grandma boosting production, and the Scientist will perform your inspections for you.

More products, equipment, hives and bee varieties will be available at launch, but this little idle game is simply adorable with its styling and cute little Grandpa running around.

From Hamster Talk’s Steam page: Hamster Talk is an idle social game that fits naturally into your day. Interact with lively hamsters on your screen, enjoy their cute reactions with a touch, visit friends’ towns, and have light chats with players around the world—all while your hamsters keep you company.

Hamster Talk is the idle social game if you love cute, pastel and cozy.  Adorable hamsters live and move along your screen, keeping you company as you go about your day. Your selected hamsters wander across your screen playing with the various items you provide for them.  Tapping on the hamster lets you see their reactions.

Tap a hamster to see its adorable reactions instantly. As you spend more time with them you will observe happy moments and affectionate behaviours. Simply adorable.

You can operate a hamster workshop and grow crops, eventually having new production lines in your town. These were not available in the demo.

Chat with players from around the world in The Plaza, a shared space where random players from around the world gather and chat freely. Each time I popped in there, I was alone, but I can see this becoming an interesting feature for those who like to have a shared community aspect.

From Tidehaven: Ale and Trade’s Steam page: Cozy medieval sim meets smart idle play. Build and automate your tavern into a lively town. Decorate your space in any style you like. Gamble, breed rare horses, and manage shady deals. Watch your little world grow at the bottom of your screen.

Wrapping up my list of idle game demos I’ve played is the one I put the most time into. This is simply because it had the most content and features available to me.

First, I loved that it gave you bonus coins if you wishlisted the game, a great little idea and easy way to get someone to wishlist the game.

A cozy, idle medieval inn and town management game that thrives while you do whatever it is you need to do throughout your day. Grow your tavern, expand and decorate your inn, all while it takes care of itself when you’re not there. This was the easiest idle game to progress in. While people came to eat and drink in the inn, you had wait staff, so a lot of coin was made rather quickly. You could automate your bartender to auto-purchase some drinks, so you always have some provisions for your patrons, even if you ran out of others.

Start small and grow room by room. Add on a kitchen, a bedroom, then a market, a stable, and a secret meeting room? Grow the village beyond the inn by eventually opening a butcher, blacksmith and more. I really loved that there was a setting built in so that I could easily change it to my 2nd monitor as well, choosing what screen to have it running on, depending on what I was working on.

Many customization and décor options are available, even in the demo. You can even change the colour of the individual tiles on your flooring.

Mysterious strangers will visit from time to time and offer you games of chance to wager on. I enjoyed these little mini games, even though my luck was rather poor.

The lo-fi soundtrack was delightful to have running while I was working.

You can name the dog that lives in the inn, and you will be able to breed horses once the stables are available.

Again, no direct tasks or punishing gameplay, just stress-free accompaniment through your day. Tidehaven was a pure joy to have on my desktop.

Final thoughts:

This is just a quick selection of some of the idle games demos I played and enjoyed last week. I chose to post them as a group so you could easily find them and compare to see which you may enjoy. Please spend some time looking through the Steam Next Fest demos; there are a lot of gems to be discovered. Wishlist and review your favourites. Stay tuned to this space as I cover more demos over the next week.

Until next time…be good to yourself and be good to each other.
